There's More Than Just Berries In Oregon

A surfer was attacked by a shark on the Oregon coast Tuesday night. Tom Larson was surfing with friends at the south jetty in Florence when he felt a shark pull him off his board and bite into his foot. Ouch! He beat the shark with his surf board until it let go, and then paddled to shore. He said it felt like a bear trap. It took 35 stitches to sew up the eight holes the shark left in his foot.

Oh, And Don't Swim In Lakes Either

A woman was mauled by an otter last Thursday while swimming in Claytor Lake, VA. She'd been in the water for about an hour when she felt something grab her tushie. She pulled away but then it bit her arm and latched on to her thigh. When they pulled her out of the water the otter was still hanging on... they had to beat it off her!

R. I. P. Bubba

In 1987, Bubba arrived at the Shedd in a bucket with a note asking the aquarium to care of the little grouper because he was getting too big for his fish tank. Bubba was placed in the Wild Reef shark habitat and grew to a whopping 154 pounds. He was living the good life as a kept fish until 2001, when things took a downward turn for the grouper. He got a bacterial infection that antibiotics failed to treat. Bubba became the first fish to ever receive chemotherapy. Bubba died Tuesday ay the age of 24 due to natural causes.

Ever Hear A Whale Bark?

Luna, a lone killer whale that lived near a Canadian fishing village, was a skilled mimic that could bark just like a sea lion! But, alas, the finding is a posthumous one, as Luna was killed in a collision with a tugboat's propeller in March. But you can still listen to Luna's bark.

Liz Taylor Goes Cruising For Sharks

With eight marriages under her belt, Elizabeth Taylor probably already knows a thing or two about predators. Even so, the 74-year-old wheelchair-bound actress recently enjoyed a shark-viewing tour in Hawaii. But rather than donning the obligatory bikini, mask and snorkel, and plunging into the ocean herself, she watched from the comfort of an open-air deck, where various soft drinks and snacks were being served, as her companions lowered themselves into a 10ft by 6ft Plexiglas cage to view the sharks up close.

Thanks Stacy

Test Tube Sharks?

An artificial shark womb, complete with test tube shark babies, is the newest strategy in the effort to bring grey nurse sharks back from the brink of extinction. Apparently, grey nurse sharks wrongfully earned the reputation as man-eaters due to their needle-sharp teeth, but they're now regarded as placid and only harmful if provoked. Still... I'm not sure I want any more of these swimming around.

Look Ma, No Needles!

The stinging cells of jellyfish could soon be used to inject drugs and even apply tattoos. Jellyfish have stinging cells called cnidocysts which shoot a tiny hollow thread, at incredibly high speed, into anything that touches a "trigger" near the cell's opening, and then pump toxin through the thread into the target.

Salmon Sundaes? ‘Van-eel-a’ Ice Cream? Ew.

Scientists discovered how to extract the blood protein of the Arctic pout fish and infuse it into ice cream. Mixing it with milk, cream and sugar reduces the formation of ice crystals on the final product, meaning less cream can be used, which means fewer calories. And guess what? You may have already eaten it if you’re a fan of Popsicles and Breyers Light Double Churned ice cream bars...
