North Dakota Has Piranhas?

A piranha was caught at the Casselton reservoir in North Dakota. The woman who hooked the toothy fish called officials to alert them. The fish chief says the piranha was probably in someone's fish tank before it was tossed into the reservoir. I'd still stay out of that water...

Shark Munches On Girl In Florida

The water was kinda empty after a 9-year-old girl was bitten by a shark today at a beach in Florida. Juliette was just hanging out in the surf when she she saw something gray in the water... then it bit her. Witnesses said the shark took a good piece out of the her calf. Ew. The beach remained open.

Should I Buy Stock In This?

Teeka Tan (makers of the world's only line of jellyfish deterring sunscreens) announced today that it has completed the first phase of testing on a sunscreen formula containing a shark repellent. The study was performed at the Bimini Biological Field Station, South Bimini, and Bahamas, working in conjunction with SharkDefense. Phase 1 showed a significant reduction in bites from juvenile lemon sharks when a SharkDefense repellent was combined with the Teeka Tan SPF30 product. A more rigorous series of Phase 2 trials are scheduled to begin in July. I wonder who the test subjects are???

Set Your Tivos!

The only way to swim with the sharks is to become one... and that's just what Fabien Cousteau, the grandson of legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, does in his new CBS special, "Shark: Mind of a Demon, with Fabien Cousteau." Cousteau fabricated his own submersible "shark submarine" that looks, acts and moves like a real shark. But Cousteau almost became fish food when the sub stopped working and sank to the bottom of the ocean. The show airs this Wednesday night, June 28 at 8pm on CBS.

ANOTHER Nip In Volusia County!

Unless you want to be shark bait, stay away from Volusia County, FL. Yesterday was the first day of summer and the town has recorded its third shark bite of the year. A 22-year-old woman was standing in shallow water at New Smyrna Beach when a shark nipped her on her right foot! The injury was "minor" but a shark bite is a shark bite! On Thursday, a 24-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark at New Smyrna Beach and in April, a girl was bitten on the leg.

Underwater Press Conference

A group of 21 Austrian journalists claim to have broken a world record after taking part in an underwater press conference. The reporters, clad in full diving gear, swam 16ft below the surface of the Traun Lake in Austria. Special waterproof paper and pens were handed out for the journalists to ask questions and an underwater flipchart was set up for the presentation. The press conference was to launch a new book on diving by Austrian authors Leo Ochsenbauer und Klaus-M. Schremser. The group is planning to submit their claim to the Guinness Book of Records. The current world record is held by 15 reporters who took part in an underwater press conference last year in Las Vegas.

Great White Shark Spooks Surfers

Five surfers were chased from the water at Sporthaven Beach on Oregon's coast Friday by a great white shark. One of the surfers reported the shark encounter because he felt that other people should be aware that it happened. "It bumped one of the surfers and spun him around before disappearing," the surfer said. "Two other guys surfing nearby saw a fin and splash and then saw it circling around them. "Luckily, there was a wave coming and we all caught it to the beach," he said.

Brazilian Biter Kills Surfer

A surfer died Sunday after a shark bit him in the left thigh in waters off northeastern Brazil. Humberto Pessoa Batista, 27, was with about 30 other surfers and only about 50 feet from the beach when he was attacked. Now... this area is known to be a feeding ground for sharks, and surfing is traditionally banned here, but they lifted the restriction this year since they hadn't seen very many sharks around. Rescue workers tried to take Batista to a hospital, but the shark bite had ruptured his femoral artery and he died of a hemorrhage. This is the 18th death caused by a shark attack in this area since 1992!

Jaws Is Heading To The UK!

Look out, brits! According to The Sun (a very reliable source...), Great White Sharks could soon be swimming near British holiday beaches because of global warming. Marine researchers say UK waters are fast becoming an ideal feeding ground. The maneaters are already found as close as the Mediterranean and fishermen’s reports suggest some of the sharks, which grow up to 21ft, may have already reached the West Country coast.

It Still Ain't Safe

Thirty years after the release of the movie Jaws, are you sure it’s safe to go in the water off Amity Island? A day of fishing with his buddies two weekends ago off Martha’s Vineyard turned into the thrill of a lifetime for Peter O’Neil when he hooked a mako shark weighing 850 pounds, measuring 10.5 feet! The fishing boat was about a mile off South Beach in only about 50 feet of water when they spied a dorsal fin skimming the surface of the water. The fish was later filleted...

The article provides a step-by-step guide to producing a tail-less Flowerhorn cichlid using a pair of scissors and some antibiotics, and offers details on how to produce dyed Parrot cichlids using a hypodermic needle and some food colouring. Ew, where is the "love" in that?

There's A New Shark In Town

A University of South Carolina biologist has identified what he thinks is a new species of scalloped hammerhead shark - one more toothy, cartilaginous predator to strike terror in beachgoers - as though 39 species including tiger sharks, spiny dogfish, sharpnose sevengill sharks, longfin makos, night sharks and others found offshore aren't enough. The public is suitably horrified.
